In My Kitchen in June

Let's have a quick look, what's going on in my kitchen in June!

My brother's family were visiting us, and since it was close to my nephew's birthday, I made him a cake. It was just a basic layer cake with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gelatine-free butterfly sweets and cream. It was actually the first layer cake I've ever made, as I've always made different type of cakes, but it was fine and it went down well. I also had these nice seasonal flower bouquets as decoration. My nephew is an enthusiastic gardener and likes all kinds of plants.




Before the family visit, I also took the task of tidying the spice rack upon me. I don't do it often, and unfortunately I forgot to take before pictures. Now I can find everything more easily.



Finland won men's ice-hockey world championship in May, and on the night of the final I made this Finland-shaped naan bread. Do you think that it helped our team a bit to beat Canada? Related to that theme I'm also posting Swedish Wash brut ale (we sent Sweden home already in the quarter finals).




Now from sports to some foods I've been eating. I made homemade purple sweet potato gnocchi from lovely purple sweet potatoes from our market. I need to make them again and take better presentation photos, as it was a really nice dish.



We also made these roasted bell pepper, chipotle ketchup and mozzarella baguettes inspired by a tasty baguette that the sandwich chain Pret once had, but doesn't seem to anymore, at least not in Copenhagen.



A basic summer meal: vegetable sticks with hummus.

  1. Sounds busy but fun! I am a bit wary of layer cakes so am impressed by yours and am sure your nephew was impressed by all the effort and flowers. Did you have to throw out old spices or just neaten up the spices - I hate waste but have found a few things in my kitchen recently that are quite old and feel I need an audit. Love all your meals - naan bread looks fun. And we had purple potatoes and meant to try gnocchi but got waylaid - I love how brooding your gnocchi looks, though also a little meaty too (but lets stick with brooding)

    1. I found a couple of old spices as well that had to go, but otherwise I just tidied up. I have also recently audited my dry cupboard, because things get lost there too, but luckily it wasn't too much waste.

  2. The look cake delightful, I am sure it was appreciated. And I am absolutely loving all the flowers. The purple potato gnocchi looks wonderful, though I must admit the colour is rather meaty looking.

    1. I didn't notice before, but yes the gnocchi colour is a bit meaty I guess. 100% veggie goodness though. :)

  3. such a pretty cake veghog. (sorry, I don't know your real name.) I rarely make layer cakes, maybe never? but they always look impressive. love your gorgeous flowers too. That purple gnocchi looks amazing and so very colourful. I like the look of that baguette too. I adore hummus and like to have some in the fridge at all times. so handy for breakfast or afternoon tea. thanks so much for joining in IMK again. cheers sherry

  5. Finland shaped naan… ha ha, that’s funny. I love that you recreated a baguette that is no longer available. I often eat snack and think “I love this. I wonder if I could make it?’. This partly driven by a desire to reduce our soft packaging use but also from an economic perspective. Anyway, your baguettes are a fab combo of flavours.
