In my kitchen in September

It is again time to have a look at what’s been happening in my kitchen. Yes, it’s already September, but I’m actually quite excited for the autumn. I do like it a lot as a season.

I got this interesting Maskmel, spent grain, which is flour made from stuff leftover from beer brewing. This variant is from pilsner brewing, so I made these excellent pilsner rolls from it. They were very tasty and next time I might add some actual pilsner to the mix, as beer is quite nice in homemade bread.

As already seen in the photo above, I have a new cute wooden storage box. I’m not quite sure what I should store there. First I thought it would be good for keeping oil and vinegar bottles in order, but would it get stained from them?

These cans contain alcoholic flavoured water. I had a pear and orange blossom and a redcurrant and ginger one. They were quite light and refreshing drinks. I would buy them again as a beverage for a hot weather.

Here are some of my recent dishes. I made an insalata caprese with own tomatoes and basil. It’s always nice as a side or even as a lunch main.

This is oven feta pasta, where the tomatoes and feta are first roasted in the oven and then mixed with spaghetti. There is also a hint of chilli in the recipe to add some warmth.

I managed to find a yellow watermelon, so I made a salad from it.

Here is an chickless burger with chips and salad.

This is some veggie ravioli with lovely burrata.

And finally a nacho casserole inspired by the In My Kitchen host Sherry from Sherry’sPickings. I already posted one of my versions previously and I’ve made the dish a few times since. It’s so comforting and tasty!

Have a nice Sunday everyone!

  1. Autumn is my favourite season too. i've not heard of Maskmel spent grain before, so thanks for the introduction - your rolls are a lovely colour too - wish i could try one.

    1. Autumn indeed, such cosy times. The flour was very good, maybe they have similar products in Britain too.

    1. The yellow watermelon is a bit strange, but I think it makes a nice change. Glad to join as always. :)

  3. Hi, Veg Hog! Your rolls look enticing, as do your salads and Chickless Burger with chips. (I'm still inclined to call them chips after my ONE trip to the UK MANY years ago, despite them being called "French Fries" here.) Travel broadens the mind, yes? I also liked your new box. Maybe line the bottom with some tinfoil or plastic wrap before storing oil and vinegar in it? I'm partial to vintage boxes, too -- such character and craftsmanship! Best wishes to you, xo.

    1. I like the word chips and use it most of the time. I lined the box with clingfilm for now, but I think that tin foil might be better. Thanks for the tip!

  4. I had to look up burrata but I’m still none the wiser. What makes it different from mozzarella?

    1. The taste is the same, but burrata is a bit softer inside. So when you cut it open, a bit of soft and creamy stuff runs out.

    2. Hmm, I shall have to investigate as I’ve never seen it.

    3. It's coming more to the shops here at least, but I think I bought it also in Waitrose some years back.

  5. I love autumn too - but am really happy to be in spring here in Melbourne - so nice to have some sunshine and hope! Your kitchen looks lovely. Could you line your wooden box so you can have oils and vinegar in it - even a tea towel might help. The yellow watermelon looks cool. I haven't heard of spent grains but what a great idea. Your chickless burger and nachos are very impressive and all your good looks delicious.
