Christmas porridge

It’s December and I have made a practice run of Finnish style rice pudding, which we also call Christmas porridge. The porridge is traditionally eaten with sugar and cinnamon and there is usually also a hidden almond. Whoever gets the almond on Christmas eve, can make a wish. This time I didn’t put an almond in. I cooked the rice in oat milk, so this is also a vegan version.

Are you getting prepared for Christmas? How will your Christmas be different this year? Are you anxious, happy or something else? I would like to hear a little bit about your feelings when we are going towards the festive season. For me Christmas this year will be very different. I have always spent Christmas at home in Finland, but this year I won’t be able to travel, so my partner and I will spend Christmas in Copenhagen. It will be just the two of us and no doubt it will be quite quiet and calm apart from a few video calls to family members. I will try to bring my Finnish Christmas traditions here as much as I can and we will make the best of it.

Have a nice weekend!

  1. yes it will be a very different Christmas season indeed. I will be here (westminster, md) in a small apartment with my two dogs. I suspect that i won't even have a tree as i usually just enjoyed the one my parent' have. I would like to hear more about your Finnish traditions so please share if you can.

    1. I guess it will be a quiet Christmas at home for many. I hope you will have an enjoyable festive season.

I will surely share some of the Finnish traditions and mainly the food here on the blog throughout December. One of them is that we bring candles on the graves of our deceased loved ones on Christmas Eve and all grave yards are brightly lit, as so many people bring candles.

  2. You always seem to find some nice decorations and meals so I am sure you will make it a festive time in Copenhagen even though I am sure you will miss the rest of the family (I do know one person in Europe who is happy not to be able to visit her inlaws). It is an odd Christmas this year - we are lucky to be able to go to my parents but there is much less in the lead up than usual and I am not feeling terribly christmassy or sociable after so much lockdown lately. It is still tiring being sociable but I have just realised that unusually I have three lunches in a row this week so I imagine I will be tired by Friday!

    1. It is actually quite relaxing that all the company Christmas parties, friends' lunches etc. are cancelled, as it makes the pre-Christmas time so much less busy. I already got all presents and posted some abroad, so I can just wait and relax now. I'm occasionally trying some recipes that might be candidates for the Christmas table. Let's see, I hope it will be a nice Christmas for everyone.
